((Yeah, I know I used it for my RP sample...I honestly had been trying to come up with something else so that I could make this my first RP thread, but my inspiration abandoned me as usual...so, I decided just to use it in two places, if that's alright.))
Aurora stood on the edge of a cliff, staring lazily out at sea. Her arms were crossed over her chest, one leg braced under her weight and the other stuck carelessly in front of her. But her dragon, Eridor, was nowhere to be seen.
A half-second later, the beating of wings filled the air. Aurora’s eyes flicked to the side, and she tilted her head to watch as Eridor slowed his descent. What took you so long? she asked, a bit impatient.
Eridor’s lip curled back and he gave a guttural chuckle. He took a while to give an answer, purposely annoying Aurora. Out with it! she exclaimed. I was about to go looking for you!
Eridor’s chuckling abruptly stopped. I told you – I was hunting. He snorted. But I know you – you wouldn’t have come looking for me. You were too lost in thought to even notice me until you could feel the wind.
Aurora shook her head, turning to look back at the sea. Eridor, his curiosity seeping through their mental link, stepped up behind her. He arched his neck so that his eyes were at the same level as Aurora’s.
Ah, the sea, he said. But what are you looking for?
Aurora’s hand strayed up to rub Eridor on the nose. Just thinking, she said. Her thoughts wavered for a moment, slipping back to think about her father. About my family. I haven’t seen them in ages…but I don’t want to go back. I'm afraid of what Father might do. He supported Gallbatorix too willingly, and I don’t know if he might blame me for his business failing. Since the King’s fall, other businesses, those that were failing during his reign, sprang back and those that supported the King failed. Aurora sighed. I'm afraid. For Father’s sake – I don’t want my own father to become a beggar on the streets, but I'm afraid for our sakes too. He might blame us, and lash out in his anger. Eridor snorted dismissively. I know he wouldn’t be able to hurt us…but the only way to make him stop trying to fight us might be to… Aurora didn’t finish the sentence; she didn’t need to.
Eridor raised his head, nudging her gently in the back. He gave a reassuring rumble. I had thought that you wanted Gallbatorix dead, he said. You didn’t want to fight for him.
Aurora gave a hollow laugh. I wanted to escape. I hadn’t expected to care this much about you. I thought it would be simple to make you fight for what you didn’t want to…but I felt so guilty whenever I actually talked…I just couldn’t make myself do it. I didn’t want to fight, which is why I worked with the Varden. Given any other choice, I wouldn’t have associated myself with that ragtag band of rebels…but, through them, we won our freedom.
Eridor nodded, lying down next to her. He curled his tail protectively around her, still watching the sea with her. Then why do you still think of it? he asked.
Because our freedom cost Father his money. Now his business is failing, and I can’t help but feel that it’s my fault.
Eridor curled his tail a little more tightly around her. He supported Gallbatorix. It was inevitable that once he fell that your father’s business would fail. He turned his gaze back to sea. And who knows? If he knew that we would try to help him, he might be grateful.
Aurora jerked from the coil of Eridor’s tail. And how do you propose we help him? she demanded, tears pricking in her eyes. We have no money! All I have to sell is my own clothing, she gestured towards it as she spoke, which isn’t going to get us much more than ten crowns, and Mithuth, which I absolutely will not sell. Without it, I won’t be able to fight at all…
Eridor watched with pity in his eyes, but he didn’t reply. Aurora grunted despairingly, collapsing back against his side. The warm heat of his body was reassuring, but she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling of guilt that pushed her heart into her throat.
Eridor shielded Aurora with a wing. The light that seeped through the leathery skin took on a greenish tint, but Aurora didn’t notice at that moment. She was used to it, anyways – with all of the times that she had been shielded from wind and sun by his wings, she had grown used to it.
Sleep now, little one, was all Eridor could come up with to say. Things will look better in the morning. In spit of the bravery of his words, he didn’t feel too sure, himself.
